October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and one local organization, Cancer Cartel, is hosting a fundraising event in Coronado.
As cancer survivors, Shelly Tinney-Miller, Kerry Solmonsen and Katy Tinney-Olson co-founded Cancer Cartel in 2019 to provide financial support for individuals going through cancer treatments.
Cancer Cartel continues to help people through direct financial grants, and has reached its goal of giving away $1 million dollars since the organization’s inception, according to the organization’s website.
The website says Cancer Cartel has given over $1 million to more than 1,000 individuals battling the disease in 48 states. And while breast cancer was the leading diagnosis among the organization’s recipients in 2024, grantees experience 30 other cancer diagnoses including brain and skin cancer.
On Thursday, Oct. 23, Cancer Cartel will host Sip, Shop & Shuffle from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Coronado Fire Station at 126 Orange Ave. Organizers say the event will feature shopping, food, drinks, music and mahjong, a popular Chinese game typically played by four people at a time with the goal to make matching sets and pairs.
“We want anyone in the battle against cancer to be able to focus all of their energy on getting well and not on how much having cancer is costing them,” said Tinney-Miller about the team’s work. “From gas money to groceries, power bills to mortgage payments, we are fighting to tear down the financial barriers to wellness.”
The organization says sponsorship and volunteer opportunities are still available. For more information contact info@cancercartel.com or visit https://cancercartel.org/.
