On Aug. 30, the Coronado High cross country team opened their season at Canyon Crest Academy with the Ravens Invitational. The race featured personal records (PRs), breakout races for freshmen and a team-best 10th place finish in one of the heats.

Competing in the men’s 3-mile senior/invite race for Coronado was Vincent Russo, Andrew Buck, Nathan Ayan, Anton Youngblood, Oscar Alicandari and Chace Smith. Russo finished 53rd in a field of 315 and posted a PR of 15:44.70, improving by a minute and 46 seconds since his last PR. Buck also PR’d and finished 137th, posting a time of 16:52.30, two-and-a-half minutes better than his previous best.

Russo’s little brother, freshman Evan Russo, was the fourth-best finisher on the 3-mile course for Coronado, behind his brother, Buck and Ayan. Behind Evan Russo were Youngblood, Alicandari, sophomore Jefferey Raunig (19:25.20), freshman William Maske (19:31.00), senior Chace Smith (19:53.80) and sophomore Sebastian Tamariz (21:39.80).

Of the Islanders who competed on the 1.5-mile course, Aryton Reyes reigned supreme, placing 10th in a field of 108 runners. In all of San Diego, Reyes ranks 14th among freshmen for the 1.5-mile distance. Two other Coronado freshmen competed alongside Reyes – Jameson Laaperi (10:54.00) and Timothy Gilbert (11:25.20). Junior Oliver Surdykowski competed on the 1.5-mile course in the junior/senior heat, and ran a 10:38.00.

On the women’s side, senior Morgan Maske had the goal of breaking 19 minutes and setting a new PR. And she did exactly that. She finished in 50th place of 189, and posted a 18:59.50 time.

Three junior Islanders were alongside Maske: Maesan Everitt (23:13.30), Carly DeVore (23:25.50) and Nadia Roos (23:44.30).

Two juniors represented Coronado in the 1.5-mile junior/senior race: Vivian Scott (10:24.30) and Lily Humphrey (10:50.30), finishing 14th and 26th, respectively, in a field of 77.

Meanwhile, four Islanders competed in the 1.5-mile freshman/sophomore heat: Annalei Berke (11:09.40), Teaghan Carpinito (11:16.90), Paige Carpinito (12:21.70) and Hannah Burns (14:35.80). Berke finished 34th out of 113.
