The Coronado High School track and field team saw eight athletes qualify for the San Diego CIF section championships this year, led by senior standout Lauren Gilhooly.

The section championships, which took place on May 24, brought together the top 18 qualifiers for each event from across all divisions in the San Diego CIF section.

Lauren Gilhooly, Austin Litteral, Jack Letcher, Micaela Gistaro, Nathan Ayan, Summer Little, Andrew Buck, Vincent Russo and sophomore Maya Wilson qualified for the 2025 State Championships by finishing in the top three of their respective events.

The Islanders’ girls team started the competition off strong with a second place finish in the 4×100-meter relay, tying their season best time of 47.69 seconds. They are the first Islander relay team to qualify for the state championships.

Gilhooly placed third in the girls 100-meter dash, running the race in 11.76 seconds, just off her personal best of 11.7. Ayan finished in 13th place in the boys 800-meter run. Gistaro finished 15th in the girls 400-meter dash with a time of 59.63 seconds. The boys 4×800 relay team — with Russo, Buck, Letcher, and Litteral — finished 17th with a time of 8:40.43.
