A car crashed into San Diego Bay outside of Loews Coronado Bay resort Friday afternoon, and one adult female was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Coronado Police Department released a statement saying an emergency call came through at 4:15 p.m. Friday regarding an unknown traffic collision in the 4000 block of Coronado Bay Road.

Upon arrival, officers located a two-door vehicle fully submerged in the bay, according to the statement. One adult female was located inside and pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Coronado Fire Department, Coronado Lifeguards, the U.S. Coast Guard, Harbor Police and California State Parks personnel responded to the incident, working collaboratively to access the vehicle.

The department said at this early stage, it remains unclear what caused the vehicle to enter the bay, and the road leading up to the Loews Resort will remain closed while the investigation is ongoing.

“We would like to extend our gratitude to the bystanders and witnesses who assisted first responders during this incident,” the statement said.
