Everyone who’s ever seen TV, probably ever, has heard the phrase, “Polly want a cracker,” from a parrot at least once. When there is a parrot on TV, that is what they say, and everyone laughs. IRL, though, nobody is naming their parrots Polly… right?

Wrong! On Saturday, May 10th, one adorable, 58-year-old Amazon Parrot took over our feeds. Not only is her name really Polly, but she actually wanted a cracker. Our minds are blown and life feels so complete:

The Parrot Lady takes excellent care of all of her parrots, but the focus is usually on her Cockatoo, Sweet Pea. After seeing this video, I think I may have converted to Polly’s #1 fan!

Polly the Parrot is a rescue. When they got her back in 2021, she was covered in a thick film of dust and oil: she hadn’t had a bath in many years, maybe ever. She had to get the whole nine: safe soap, a good scrub down, lots of water. Eventually, she was feeling much better!

Now, she gets “baths” (though they’re less rigorous) as often as she needs them, and she seems to really fit in with Sweet Pea, Brody (the African Grey), and Thyme, a Sun Conure. She has no problem playing, squawking, and demanding snacks!

Polly, nearing her sixties, asked for a cracker, and you best believe she got one. Senior privilege is so real!

Parrots can actually eat crackers, though they should be a special treat, and you should be careful about what kinds of crackers you’re giving them. Many store-bought crackers are full of fat, sugar, and salt… A tasty treat for humans, but not great for parrots.

When you’re picking a cracker for your parrot, try to get one that’s organic and has some seeds in it! You can even try to grab some gluten-free ones if that makes you feel better, though it’s not required. Just try to make sure the crackers aren’t seasoned or salted.

You could try making your own, too. Whatever gets Polly a cracker as fast as possible is good enough for her!
