Many dog parents out there form daily routines with their dogs. It makes life easier for everyone, and so many dogs thrive on their routines and knowing what’s going to happen in their day next. And then, there are the dogs who create their own routines.
For example, the Golden Retriever in the TikTok video below, who may just have created the most adorable nightly routine ever all on his own.

On Wednesday, March 19, @samanddex shared the sweetest footage of her dog Dexter’s evening routine: Watching the sunset in the yard with all of his favorite stuffies surrounding him in the grass.
“In five minutes from now the sun will set and Dexter will drag all his stuffies to his next event,” Dexter’s mom wrote in the video.
He’s so still that it looks like he’s as peaceful as can be, and it really does look like the perfect moment. It’s no wonder he’s made this part of his daily routine!
In the comments, Dexter’s mom said that there’s “no rhyme or reason” to the way he sets up his stuffies, which makes it all the more fascinating. As one person commented, “Do you think he’s enjoying the sunset??? Or is he using it as a measurement of time? I’m so incredibly intrigued!”
If only Dexter could answer all of our questions… but then again, maybe that’s part of the reason he’s so zen!
Why dogs carry around their favorite toys
It looks like it must have been a lot of work for Dexter the Golden Retriever to bring all of those toys outside every night and then schlep them back into the house after the sun has set, but if this expert’s opinion is correct, it makes sense that he’d feel motivated to.
According to what cat and dog behavior expert Susan Nilson told Newsweek, carrying stuffies around may be an instinct for many dogs.
“Some dogs, especially those bred for hunting or retrieving, have a strong instinct to carry objects in their mouths so that could be a factor here,” she told the outlet. “It’s also quite common for dogs to carry toys in their mouths as a form of comfort or security, similar to how a child might hold a security blanket or stuffed animal.”
With the way that he likes spending time with his stuffies every evening, it certainly would seem like Dexter sees them as his security blanket. Besides, who can’t relate to wanting to take in beautiful sights with the ones you love at your side?
