The Coronado police department responded to a call from a man experiencing a mental health crisis at the Hotel Del Coronado at 7:20 p.m. on Saturday night.
According to Lea Corbin, the department’s public information officer, the caller stated he was suicidal and in possession of a firearm but was unable to provide his exact location before disconnecting.
His call continued to disconnect after dispatchers attempted to call him back multiple times. Using mobile phone location data, they determined he was near the resort’s main pool.
Corbin said officers searched the area and located him on a balcony overlooking the pool. As a precaution, guests in nearby rooms were evacuated.
After an extended effort when the subject refused to cooperate, officers were able to take him into custody safely and he was transported to the hospital for evaluation.
The department said no weapon was found, and he was not a registered guest at the hotel.
Hotel Del security temporarily placed the resort on a modified lockdown out of an abundance of caution. The subject did not threaten harm to others, only himself.
Despite misinformation circulating on social media, there was no active shooter, Corbin said.
“We appreciate the assistance of SDPD’s ABLE and K9 units and thank hotel guests for their patience,” Corbin said.
