A circle of parents, teachers and their students surround the flagpole every Friday at Silver Strand Elementary School to say the Pledge of Allegiance.

Following the pledge on the last Friday in January, Principal Jenny Moore also made a few announcements and welcomed a special guest from Jazzercise Coronado who danced alongside staff and students.

These Friday assemblies host a variety of activities. Once a month, students from Anchored4Life — a peer-to-peer youth club — lead the Friday gatherings. And on Jan. 31, clinical counselor Sophia Frost guided the students through breathing exercises, or a “peaceful pause.”

Darcy Miante and her fifth-grade daughter Kailani Miante announced a new Girls on the Run club chapter for third to fifth-grade students.

“It’s such an embedded tradition,” said Frost about the weekly school meet-ups at the flagpole.
