For her fans, the subject of Taylor Swift and the subject of cats go hand in hand. Not only is the singer a proud mom to three cats of her own — Meredith, Olivia, and Benjamin — but she’s also been known to travel with them, put them in her music videos, and even sell merchandise bearing their adorable faces. It’s hard not to fall in love with two Scottish Folds, plus a Ragdoll cat. They’re so cute that it makes sense that she (and in turn, many Swifties) are completely obsessed with them.
She’s also never been shy about sharing the love that she has for the felines in her life. Whether she’s singing about them in her music or talking about them in interviews, Taylor has never tried to hide her true feelings about cats — her own, or the animal in general!

1. The lyrics in “Gorgeous”
In Taylor’s song “Gorgeous” from her Lover album, she’s singing about not wanting to speak to a really hot guy she just saw because he’s simply too gorgeous, so instead, she sings, “I guess I’ll just stumble on home to my cats.” Doesn’t sound like a bad evening to me!
2. How many cats makes a cat lady?

Before Taylor adopted her third cat, Benjamin, she appeared on Live With Kelly and Michael in 2014, and talked about how she was going to stop at two so she didn’t qualify as an official cat lady.
“Before I got the second cat, I was kind of canvassing everyone I knew, saying, ‘Is cats, cat lady?’ Two cats is cats, and there’s more than one. And they’re like, ‘No, three cats is a cat lady, two cats is a party.'”
But she’s not sweating that cat lady life, as she proved in this TikTok video where she referenced the interview years later. Ha!
3. The perfect comeback
While on the Grammys red carpet back in 2015, Taylor had the perfect cat-inspired comeback when she was asked if she’d be taking home “lots of men” that night.
“I’m not going to walk home with any men tonight. I’m going to go hang out with my friends and go home to the cats,” she said.

In 2019, Taylor celebrated National Cat Day by sharing a photo of her hugging Olivia on Instagram, along with a very important message: “Hug your cat today. Or don’t, if your cat hates hugs. But anyway. Happy #NationalCatDay from me, Olivia, Meredith, and Benjamin.”
5. On adopting Benjamin
While talking to fans on Instagram live, Taylor explained how she came to adopt Benjamin when they met on the set of her music video, “Me!.”
“[The handler] handed me this tiny cat and he just starts purring and…he looks at me like, ‘You’re my mom, and we’re going to live together.’ I fell in love. I looked at Brendon [Urie] and he’s like, ‘You’re going to get the cat, aren’t you?’” she said.
6. Where is Meredith?

Back in 2021, fans were concerned when they realized they hadn’t seen Meredith in a while… so Taylor took to Instagram to explain exactly where she had been: She simply doesn’t like having her picture taken.
“She’s just a private little cat,” Taylor said. “She likes her business kept to herself and she doesn’t like a camera shoved in her face and who can blame her?”
7. The lyrics to “Karma”
In the chorus of her song “Karma” from Midnights, Taylor sings, “Karma is a cat purring on my lap ’cause it loves me.” Cats don’t love just anyone, you know — it really does mean you’re a good person if a cat has agreed to purr in. your lap!
8. Starring in cats
When talking to Time about her starring role in the movie adaptation of the Broadway musical, Cats, Taylor said her love of felines meant she couldn’t stay away.
“When a role came up in a movie called Cats, I just thought, I’ve got to do this,” she said. “This is my calling in life to do this for the ladies. So I went to cat school, which they have on set readily available for us. Learned how to be as much like a cat as I possibly could.”
9. Olivia’s nickname
During an appearance on The Ellen Show, Taylor explained that Olivia’s nickname at home is Dibbles, because apparently, it suits her more.
“She’s a scrappy little cat,” Taylor said.
Personally, I’m ready for more footage of these kitties ASAP. They’re so cute — and they all have such big personalities!
