The Ian Harland Quartet will perform smooth jazz on Friday, July 12 at 1 p.m. at the Coronado Public Library.
Participants will hear melodies both familiar and new with the innovative improvisations of some of San Diego’s finest jazz musicians. The quartet features John Opferkuch on piano, Doug Walker on bass, Tyler Kreutel on Drums, and headliner Ian Harland on the vibraphone.
Native San Diegan Ian Harland has been paying music since he was 7 years old. While studying at San Diego State University, he became increasingly interested in harmony and composition which led his studies towards mallets rather than a drum set.
When his teacher, Anthony Smith, moved to New York, Harland bought Smith’s vibraphone and set out to become fluent as an improvisor and composer on the instrument. He now records and performs professionally as a vibraphonist.
Joining him on stage is Opferkuch, a jazz pianist who also plays with Peter Sprague, Charles MacPherson and Jeff Berlin.
Versatile bassist Walker has been on the San Diego scene since 2001 showcasing his background in jazz, earthy blues, funky soul, breakneck bluegrass or folky roots-rock.
Kreutel graduated from the San Diego School for Creative and Performing Arts in 2012 and went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in music at California State University Long Beach. He performs regularly with Gilbert Castellanos, Joshua White, Charles McPherson, Marshall Hawkins and others.
Doors will open 15 minutes before the performance. Find out more by heading to cplevents.org.
The Summer Festival is made possible thanks to the support of the Friends of the Coronado Public Library and the Hotel del Coronado.
