Elections for the city’s newest council began earlier this month and in a matter of weeks, Coronado will have its 2024 canine mayor.
On June 28, PAWS of Coronado will name its eighth canine mayor to serve a two-year ceremonial position of being the face of a group of furry ambassadors.
A total of 15 dogs are nominated by local residents to run in the canine mayor race, which also serves as a fundraiser for PAWS.
All nominees become a part of the canine council, serving as ambassadors to promote PAWS and its mission at various events—including next month’s 75th annual 4th of July Parade.
The canine mayor fundraiser is a fun and engaging event that raises essential funds but also strengthens community ties, said Jennifer Stein, senior manager of fund development at PAWS.
“They act as ambassadors for PAWS, attending events and helping to raise awareness for animal welfare throughout the year,” said Stein. “We love to have the community involved in our efforts.”
For the past 20 years, PAWS has taken in neglected dogs and cats to eventually find them their forever home. In recent years, the animal shelter has seen atypical numbers resulting in overcrowding.
According to Stein, the funds raised in the past canine mayor elections have helped the facility care for new animals who require medical care outside of the normal vaccines and spay and neuter services.
“It also goes towards efforts to get the dogs adopted and into foster homes to aid in the overcrowding issue that is happening around not only in San Diego but across the country as well,” Stein added.

Big fundraiser
Stein said the 15 dog candidates were nominated online last month from May 2 to May 24.
These canines reside in Coronado or were Pacific Animal Welfare Society adoptees.
On June 15, PAWS is hosting the Coronado Canine Mayor Meet & Greet Event at the Coronado Ferry Landing from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. where people can meet the pups, vote and enjoy specials from local businesses to additionally benefit the animal shelter.
Stein said votes are cast through donations, with each dollar donated counting as one vote.
The voting period closes at 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 27 and PAWS will announce the canine mayor, or dog with the highest number of votes, the following day.
According to Stein, the fundraiser has brought in over $5,000 as of June 4.
“In 2022 we were able to raise over $40,000,” wrote Stein. “These funds are crucial for continuing our efforts and care.”
Leading in votes this week is Carl, Penny and Toby Toberson, but results change as donations come in, added Stein.
