Vice Adm. Daniel Cheever, also known by his call sign, “Undra,” has celebrated the Fourth of July at sites all around the world.
That includes the lawn at the Joint Chief of Staff’s house in Washington, D.C; in combat on the USS George H. W. Bush; at central California’s Naval Air Station Lemoore while training in F/A-18 Hornets; and on military tours spanning the globe.
In his 60 years of life – and almost four decades in the Navy – Cheever says his most memorable July 4 experience was in Coronado. And that’s where he’ll be this year, commemorating Independence Day with family, including his 96-year-old father and granddaughter.
This year, he will be the grand marshal at the 75th Coronado Fourth of July Parade.
Cheever still recalls that first time in Coronado: “[It] was watching the fireworks from the tower of the commander of Naval Air Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet building at North Island,” he said in an email to The Coronado News.
Over the years, Cheever’s sea and shore duties included tours as commanding officer tour with Strike Fighter Squadron 147, department head for Top Gun, and aide de camp to Gen. Richard B. Myers.
Although he didn’t always get to spend this holiday with family and friends, he said being deployed during the Fourth of July was a profound honor.
“It signifies our commitment to preserving peace, enabling crisis response and achieving decisive victory in combat,” Cheever said. “To all those serving and deployed this holiday season, thank you.”
