How do you know you’re ready to adopt a dog?

According to Nylabone, the first step to finding out if you’re ready to adopt a dog is to really think about why you want to and then evaluate whether everything is there.

“You may want to make a difference in the lives of your kids and the dog you choose, but above all else, you must want to bring this particular dog into your life,” they suggest. “You must fully understand what caring for a particular dog entails before deciding to adopt him.”

Then you need to get the timing right, and you need to take a real look at whether you have the time to care for a dog and all its needs. “For the safety of all involved, timing is crucial for families considering dog adoption,” they warn.

A few questions to ask include the hours you work outside the home, whether you’re able to make time to walk your pup several times a day, whether you have to travel a lot, and whether you can afford the time and money it costs to care for a dog.

Then, from there, it’s important to find the right dog, looking past just its breed, look, and first-glance personality.
