When we think of huge cats, people usually forget about Savannahs. We go straight for more “traditional” big cats, like Peterbalds or Maine Coons. Savannahs are just as cool, though, and just as big!

Recently, one Savannah cat mom took to TikTok to show us how big her boy is. Not only is he about half the size of her, but she says he definitely has the attitude to match:

@dexterboycatDex is almost half of me 😂🙀♥️ #cat #cats #cattok #catsoftiktok #bigcat #savannahcat

Dexter the boy cat is so big it’s actually crazy. Dare I say, he looks bigger than some Maine Coon cats I’ve seen!

Dexter is a purebred Savannah. In his bio, it lists that he is an “F6 SBT Savannah,” which would mean that he’s a purebred cat bred 6 generations down from the Serval cat, which is the wild cat it’s descended from. Dexter’s massive size and incredibly long neck are trademark features of a cat that’s not so far removed from its wild ancestors!

Dexter is a total star; everyone loves this big kitty. As a Savannah, he’s a little bit crazy, but his boy-cat genes shine through and show themselves in how affectionate he is. He loves treats, and above all else, he loves his mom!

More about Savannah cats

Savannah cats are absolutely fascinating. The way that they’re bred is interesting: though many Savannah enthusiasts want their Savannahs to be as “pure” as possible, genetics are also a factor. Some research suggests that the closer you get to the Serval (F1-F5), they’re more likely to be infertile, and they’re harder to manage, since they’re a little more “wild.”

When it comes to purchasing (or rescuing) a Savannah, most people look for cats that are from the 6th-8th generations (F6-F8). These cats are more fertile, and they’re a little more tame, too. anything further than the 8th generation tends to start losing those “Serval” features, unfortunately. But they’re just as beautiful!

People do sometimes keep actual Servals, but that’s not really recommended. They’re wild cats and usually caught and bred unethically – not to mention how possessive and aggressive they can be. These cats are meant to be outdoors, so unless you’re equipped to accommodate that, you should definitely stick to a Savannah!

Maine Coons are gorgeous cats, but a large portion of their size is attributed to their sheer fluff. After all, a full-grown male Maine Coon only weighs about 20 pounds – the Savannah can often get up to around 30, and at 16-20 inches tall, they’re just huge. Dex is no exception: everything about him is awesome!
