Does anyone else have a dog who simply must try whatever it is you’re eating at the time? It doesn’t matter if it’s human food she’s tried before and liked, or something she’s never seen in her life — she wants to eat it. Actually, it could be something she’s tried before and didn’t like, and if I’m eating it, she wants some, too. Sometimes, the solution is just to let her eat some and find out the hard way that she’s not going to like it (as long as it’s something that’s safe for dogs to consume, of course) which can sometimes lead to some funny reactions.
But I’m sad to say that my dog has never had a reaction quite like the one this puppy did to trying a lime for the first time. There’s no way his mom could have warned him that it would be sour… but he managed to figure that out all on his own.

This hilarious content comes to us from @caesar.theberner, a TikTok account dedicated to an adorable Bernese Mountain Dog puppy named Caesar who is apparently figuring out life, one taste of citrus at a time.
We can see his mom holding out half a lime to him, and it looks like he’s really, really curious about it, but somehow he innately knows that it’s going to be bad news for him if he takes a bite. That sense of smell is strong with this one!
Several times, he almost bites it before he can think better of it and turns his head away, and when he finally does get a tiny taste of the lime, he realizes it’s just not worth it. He even bites the air, he’s so conflicted about this.
But finally, he lays down on the couch and he’s done. Caesar has declared that limes are gross. Poor thing!
Can dogs taste like humans can?
Well, yes, and no.
According to the American Kennel Club, dogs have the same four sense classifications that are also found in humans — salty, sour, sweet, and bitter. However, they have way less taste buds than we do; we have around 9,000 while they only have 1,700, so their sense of taste isn’t as strong as ours is.
However, their sense of smell is stronger, so that kind of makes up for it, which helps them differentiate between foods that may taste similar to them.
Interestingly enough, they also have their own special taste bugs dedicated to water that we don’t have at the tip of their tongue, helping them not to get dehydrated. That’s pretty cool!
Sounds like Caesar needs some water (and maybe a nice steak dinner) to make up for that lime!
