Over 3,000 Coronado homes were judged by 175 volunteers for the 2024 home front judging competition, but only one took home the title of “Best in Village.” That crown was given to 311 9th St.

The home front judging competition has been going on for decades and was started by the Coronado Floral Association as an initiative for island beautification.

The “Best in Village” title is given to what Home Front Judging Co-chair Lori P Smith calls “for lack of a better description, a ‘wow’ home,” which was true for this year’s home front winner for  its colorful, flourishing garden.

“You would think you are walking into a garden in Tuscany. It is just stunning, really no words. It’s very thoughtful, it’s mature – she has plants that are over 100 years old.”

“You would think you are walking into a garden in Tuscany,” said Smith. “It is just stunning, really no words. It’s very thoughtful, it’s mature – she has plants that are over 100 years old.”

From April 5-7, Coronado home fronts were judged based on how well-tended, blooming and cohesive their plants were, as well as the overall design of the yard.

The Best in Village, 1st Runner Up (445 Pomona Ave.), 2nd Runner up (416 10th St.) and top ten home fronts were named after careful consideration from the judges. There were also winners for special categories such as Best Earth Friendly, Best Coronado Park, Best Motel & Hotel Front, Best Church Grounds and more.
