Though it’s not always advisable to help wild animals who appear to be struggling (for example, you should probably avoid stopping to help dangerous and potentially deadly ones, like bears) sometimes, people are the only ones who can help. While it’s always a risk to get close to an animal you’ve never met before — after all, they can be pretty unpredictable creatures — it can really pay off when you’re able to assist someone who really needs it. And that seems to be especially true when baby animals are involved!

This very brave good samaritan took one of those chances, and… well, let’s say that he might have regretted it, at least for a moment. Helping out some baby ducks who were struggling may not have gone exactly the way he envisioned thanks to their very territorial mama, but he still managed to warm some hearts in the process.

In this video that @sarahbeth_m shared on TikTok on Thursday, April 18 that was taken somewhere in Charleston, South Carolina. It looked like a family of ducklings was really struggling in this parking lot, so this man decided to jump out of the car and help.

The poor ducklings were having a hard time getting up onto the curb (after all, their legs are so tiny!) so he tried to lift them up. Unfortunately, the mama duck took this as a threat, and proceeded to fly directly at his chest. Ouch!

Despite the setback, he tried one more time… and got attacked by mama duck again. He didn’t give up until all of the ducklings were on the curb, though, and then ran back to the safety of the car.

In the process of all of this, he did help the people who saw this video feel a little better about humanity in general because of his efforts.

How to help baby ducks in need

Just in case you ever happen to find yourself in a similar situation to this man, you, too, can become a hero (well, as much as he managed to become one in the eyes of these ducks).

First, though, it’s important to figure out whether the ducks actually need help — something that will hopefully help you avoid being attacked by an angry mama duck!

If you find a baby duckling all alone, the best thing you can do is call a wildlife rehabilitation center. They can offer help, or tell you how to proceed if you want to keep the duckling (and let you know whether or not that’s even a legal option in your area).

Speak softly, move slowly, and remember just how delicate their little bodies are. And maybe make sure that there really is no mama duck anywhere to be seen before you get attacked, too.

All that matters is that his heart was in the right place!
