It’s fairly common to see photos of dogs posing next to skateboards on social media. But it’s much more rare to find dogs that actually know how to ride a skateboard like this rowdy little Dachshund.

As we see in this epic clip, not only does this pup have the ability to distribute his weight to move forward on his board (which is unbelievably impressive), but to fearlessly take the plunge and ride down that set of stairs is no small feat. See for yourself!

Also, can we talk about his gear? He has the style dialed. The black hat with the brim propped up. The rugged Thrasher magazine vest. This little guy has it figured out! He looks tough and he is tough. Add the fact that he’s singing along to The Ramones iconic song, “Blitzkrieg Bop” and we might be looking at skateboarding’s next rising star.

While skateboarding dogs are technically nothing new, the level of progression we’ve seen over the years is pretty mind-blowing. Simply riding a board is cool enough, but these dogs are learning how to push on their own and do tricks like this. He has the confidence, that’s for sure. And dare I say it… he has style, too. Someone get this guy a bone sponsor or something!

Teaching your dog how to skateboard

There are a ton of tricks you can teach your dog, right? Sit, shake, lie down… the list goes on. But if you really want your pup to shine (or become TikTok famous), you should definitely teach them how to skateboard.

While the thought may seem fun, if not absurd, it’s actually pretty doable. Certain pups, such as Bulldogs, are actually known to be naturals when it comes to the sport due to their low centers of gravity. But even larger breeds (if they can fit on the boards) can put the “dog” in Dogtown all the same.

All you really have to do is familiarize your pet with the unique sensation of standing on the board, then gently introduce them to movement.

Meanwhile, you’ll enjoy the satisfaction of sticking it to all other parents at the dog park. Or, better yet, if you skate yourself… you’ll always have someone to skate with. Everyone wins!

We sort of touched on the first two steps—getting your dog comfortable standing on the board, and getting them comfortable moving on a board.

After that, the real training begins, because teaching them how to push (or move on their own) can be pretty taxing—but so worth it!

Do what feels comfortable and make sure to reward them anytime they take their paws off the board and nudge themselves forward. This step is critical and will really separate the pros from the amateurs.

From there, you want to gradually increase the speed (and distance) that your pup is riding. Keep in mind that some dogs may not enjoy the increased speed or riding it for longer periods of time, so just stay within your dog’s comfort zone.

If your doggo is absolutely loving it, try loosening the trucks on the skateboard (the metal pieces the wheels are attached to) and see if they can start steering the board on their own. At that point, you’ll have a regular pro on your hands!

Just know that dogs like the Dachshund pup in the video above are very experienced and highly skilled, and few dogs will attain that level of success at skateboarding.

Also, always keep in mind what your dog can comfortably do so that you don’t put them in a situation that is over their head. Stick to smooth surfaces, keep them away from roads and other dangers, and don’t send them down a hill of any kind—no matter how mild—until they’re ready.

But hey, before you know it, you’ll have the best skateboarding buddy imaginable! And I can guarantee they’ll feel so proud (and cool) every time they hop on that board and take a ride.
