The Coronado Municipal Golf Course is set to host the Coronado Rotary Club’s 28th Annual Charity Golf Tournament on Friday, March 15, 2024, starting at 10:30 a.m.
Golf enthusiasts are invited to gather their friends and take part in a day of friendly competition on Coronado’s picturesque course, all while supporting a worthy cause.
The tournament promises not only a chance to showcase golf skills but also the opportunity to contribute to Rotary’s community projects in Coronado, according to Pat Starke, president-elect of the Coronado Rotary Club.
“They [the programs] all make Coronado a better place in one way or another,” Starke said, “but it takes money to do all that and the money to do that comes from this golf tournament.”
‘One of the best golf courses in America’
Starke, who has almost 40 years of involvement in Rotary, said that the tournament is a way for all to play on “one of the best golf courses in America.”
“We have a lot of pretty generous sponsors … I know a sponsor who’s donated money so that we can have the folks from the Naval Base play [and] I know we have a sponsor who donated so the [Coronado] high school kids can come play,” Starke said. “We [also] have people who are highly handicapped who play out of the sheer joy of being there with other people and having fun.”

Additional sponsors include the event’s title sponsor, EDCO, and local restaurants and hotels.
“We hope to have the participation of every significant business in Coronado and even those that are small,” Starke said, “because the things that we do, we think make Coronado just a little bit nicer place for people to live, as well as take the edge off some of the issues that all communities have, including Coronado, just by our dedication to working on those items, and apply a little bit of people’s money to fix them.”
Competing for cash prizes
Participants will compete for cash prizes as they set their sights on the ninth hole’s $10,000 hole-in-one reward. Additionally, those showcasing a skilled putting touch stand a chance to sink a 50-foot putt, earning them entry into a drawing for an extra $10,000.
Participants can also win prizes for being closest to the flag on the par threes, adding an extra layer of competition to the event.
The funds raised will support over 60 community projects championed by the Rotary Club of Coronado. Beneficiaries include noteworthy initiatives such as Wounded Warriors, Camp Able, Coronado SAFE, the Imperial Beach Food Bank, Honor Flight Network, the Coronado State Foundation and Feed the Needy.
The golf tournament is one of the three signature fundraising programs that the Coronado Rotary Club hosts annually, the other two being the club’s Low Tide Ride and Stride which is dedicated toward generating funds for Wounded Warriors and first responder programs and a wine-tasting event that raises funds to eradicate polio.
Early bird special for early registrants
The Rotary Club offers an early bird special for early registrants. The first person from each of the initial ten teams to register will have an exclusive shot at winning a $100,000 prize in a hole-in-one contest.
Individual registration stands at $250, while teams can sign up for $1,000, covering green fees, entry to the putting contest, a luncheon, a goody bag and access to a cocktail party.
“It’s an opportunity for people to socialize, play a little golf and most importantly, raise money for an awful lot of good community activities,” Starke said.
