Snow can be a polarizing topic. Some people don’t like snow because of the the way it hinders travel while others adore snow because it presents the perfect opportunity for some good, old-fashioned shenanigans.

On Thursday, December 21, an animal sanctuary in Upstate New York showed their cows belong in the latter category. In the clip, their herd of rescue cows eagerly galloped into their enclosure through the freshly fallen snow and spent the whole day playing together. It’s beyond cute!

When the sun went down on the Winter Solstice, we imagine these cows were tucked in their barn and ready to sleep on a nice, warm pile of hay. With as much fun as these bodacious bovines were having, we imagine they fell asleep as soon as they closed their eyes for the evening!

Cows Are Social and Intelligent Animals

Cows are incredibly social animals that rely on and thrive with their herd. When they live a solitary lifestyle, they are known to become lonely and distressed. However, those who have at least one other cow to befriend feel happy and safe. It’s no surprise to know that cows in herds are happier, more energetic, and more relaxed!

Within a herd, they interact in a variety of ways. These animals are able to pick up on and feel the emotions of those around them, and when a member of the herd is stressed, other cows will provide them with comfort. Among the ways they can communicate with each other are unique vocalizations, nuzzling, grooming, and even playing together.

As this video makes clear, they’re no strangers to play time. Uniquely, nearly all forms of playing that are done by another mammal is also one of the many ways that cows play with each other. Whether it’s knocking around a large ball, play-fighting, or merely galloping alongside each other, they’ll have a blast!

In fact, they even befriend other animals. In addition to the bonds that cows can form with their human caretakers, these friendly creatures have been known to make friends with donkeys, goats, and even dogs!

There’s no doubt that they’re curious, clever, and friendly. The rescue cows at Farm Sanctuary were more than deserving of a fun snow day!
