Our cats know more than we think they do. They’re fantastic at not letting on that they know our deepest, darkest secrets, but they do. Apparently, as this TikTok from Sunday, December 10th explains, there are a few things our feline friends are keenly aware of that we may not be:

If it wasn’t for @cat_tigrous, a cat’s best methods of sleuthing around would be completely unknown. As far as the cats themselves are concerned, maybe that would be for the best!

All animals have different instincts, and it’s no surprise that the animals who depend on us for survival would be good at memorizing our lives inside and out. According to this TikToker, cats are very observant, and that helps them keep track of where we are, when we’ll be back, where we’ve been, and more.

Dogs always get credited for having excellent noses, but it’s not just dogs! Though considerably smaller and way less wet, cats have very powerful noses, too, and they can sniff out:

  1. Where we’ve been (or, at least, a general idea)
  2. If there were other animals there
  3. If there were other people there
  4. A single piece of wet food from all the way upstairs (seriously, how do they do that?)

Their ability to find and memorize scents is what makes introducing your cat to new people a little easier – and why they might decide to be besties with someone in your life, even if they’ve never met them. If their smell has been on your clothes, the cat remembers.

Routines Are Important For Cats

One of the most important parts of this video is the fact that the TikToker says that cats memorize every part of our daily routine, and that’s how they weave themselves into it. They know when we’re busy, when we’re not, and when they’re supposed to be the center of our attention.

Though it’s completely unrealistic to expect a human to uphold a routine at all costs just for a cat, it’s important not to get mad at a cat for “annoying” us if they’re trying to stay on track. For example, when they start going crazy about 30 minutes before dinner, we simply need to accept it and move on – but we should not give in and feed them earlier. Instead, if your cat is really being insufferable, you can:

  1. Redirect them using toys
  2. Give them pets and scratches
  3. Pick them up and move them somewhere else

Oftentimes, these tactics are enough to distract the cat until it’s actually mealtime. It’s part of the routine, and it makes sense that they’d start getting hungry about 30 minutes before they eat, but don’t give in to the pressure. They aren’t going to wither away to nothing because you made them eat dinner on time. Giving in and feeding them earlier will just perpetuate the problem.

People who hate cats will often say that they feel like cats are plotting their downfall, as if they’re always watching. Truthfully, they are always watching us, but they have no ill intentions with their strange behavior. They just want to be sure we still care about them!
