A good bath is genuinely one of the best feelings in the world. When you get the water just right, the bubbles are exactly fluffy enough… There’s just nothing better.

Apparently, humans aren’t the only ones who enjoy a nice bath after a long day. On Monday, November 20th, one Chihuahua showed off her love for bath time:

This video from @chihua_in_love is so interesting. I’ve never seen a Chihuahua that likes water before!

Typically, small dogs with short legs aren’t big into water: they just weren’t bred for it. Chihuahuas, for example, hail from the Mexican state of Chihuahua. The modern day version of these small-but-mighty dogs can be traced back to about the mid-1800s, though their ancestors are thought to be thousands of years older than that.

Techichis can be traced back to about the 10th century, and they allegedly served many purposes, including being sacrificial offerings and companions in periods of illness. Their warmth provided comfort, and Chihuahuas have been used as companions since their breed’s beginning. Spiritually, many Central and South Americans believe Chihuahuas to be guide dogs into the afterlife.

Throughout their rich and seriously fascinating history, water rarely comes up – they just don’t like it. Small dogs tend to dislike water: they’re not good swimmers and the water causes them to lose body heat faster. According to this Chihuahua, though, a nice warm bath is a totally different story – and she even has some pet-safe suds.

Bathing dogs is something that gets overlooked a lot, but it’s actually a pretty important part of the pet care routine. Bathing your dogs, even the short-haired ones, helps prevent problems with their skin and their fur. You can add in certain elements to make it even more beneficial, like:

  1. Oats
  2. Honey
  3. Rosemary

These things will all soothe the skin and even encourage healthy coat growth. Bathing your dog about once a months should be fine, and you can spot-clean with baby wipes or spray on “shampoo” in the meantime. If you can, start the process early and accompany it with lots of treats and praise. Maybe your dog will enjoy bathtime just as much as this little Chihuahua!
