Expectations are high for the Coronado High School volleyball team with 11 returning players that include seven seniors, said Coach Adeile Ahmu.
That group includes middle blockers Emily Wygal, Ruby Deckman, Riley Coker, Raine Wilson, defensive specialist Emily Fernandez, and outside hitters Lindsey Balsley and Sydney Jones.
Ahmu said she’s excited to have seven seniors for the leadership and maturity they bring to the team.
“The girls’ leadership skills are astronomical,” she said.
Newcomers for the squad
Newcomers include junior defensive specialist Sophie Peterson, who was called up to the varsity squad this season. The Islanders also added Wilson, who moved to Coronado this summer.
Ahmu said she the team wants to deliver on a league championship after falling short last season.
“Their mindset is they want to win their league championship,” said Ahmu.
Ahmu also believes in a steady growth mindset.
“It’s a long season for the girls. We’ll grow throughout the year and get stronger as a unit, more comfortable and play a little better as time goes,” said Ahmu.
Balanced approach
Ahmu added she’s focused on a balance between competition, fun, and effort
“I’m looking forward to competing at their highest level, having fun, and making memories with the girls. I want the girls to finish and say they gave it their all this season,” Ahmu said.
The Islanders opened their season on Aug. 16 with a 3-0 sweep of Maranatha Christian School. Since then, they’ve won one of their last five, dropping to 2-5 overall as of Aug. 25.
Their schedule is loaded with upwards of 30 games, starting in the middle of August and running through late October.
