The Optimist Club of Coronado on June 1 awarded four $3,000 scholarships to graduating seniors of Coronado High School.
The winners were Tayah Bubulka, twin sisters Mariella and Natalia Avanni and Austin Miller.
The students were presented with their checks and honored at an awards breakfast among family and friends at the Coronado Community Center.
Optimist Club of Coronado President Paul Lull praised the parents for their involvement in the lives of their children, and he said all the scholarship winners provided optimism and showed what it took to be successful.
Here are the winners:
Tayah Bubulka
Tayah Bubulka, one of the top swimmers at Coronado High School and a Military Child of the Year semifinalist, received the Octagon Club Scholarship.
Bubulka will attend USC and major in architecture. She also is a Gold Award winner, the highest honor among Girl Scouts who set themselves apart from their peers through perseverance and grit.
And Bubulka is involved with the Junior Optimist Club.
Austin Miller
Austin Miller has participated in the Boy Scouts for 10 years, and he plans to study business and E-commerce at Cal Poly Pomona and Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand.
Miller received the Eagle Scout Scholarship, and he also has an online sneaker business and his own YouTube channel.
Mariella and Natalia Avanni
Twins Mariella and Natalia Avanni each were awarded the NJROTC or Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps scholarship.
This sisters play golf and have excelled in the classroom.
Once the Avanni sisters start college this fall at the University of California San Diego, they plan to use the scholarship money toward their cognitive science major.
