Money is the least of worries right now for the Los Angeles Chargers and that goes for their star players and their front office. Austin Ekeler was not able to receive the big contract that he was looking for but he has the chance to add another $2 million to his pocket if he upholds usual production.
And even though LA didn’t have a ton of cap space to splurge this offseason, they still came away with a huge defensive addition in Eric Kendricks and also welcomed back the likes of Trey Pipkins III and Donald Parham.
But everybody knows they are preparing a massive contract extension for none other than Justin Herbert. Lamar Jackson got his money, Jalen Hurts did as well, and now Herbert is next in line. And like I said, neither side is in any rush to get it done.
Herbert’s new deal will obviously take up majority of LA’s cap space moving forward and GM Tom Telesco doesn’t think any conversations need to be had between him and his star QB for there to be an understanding of that.
“At least in our situation, I don’t think I need to have that talk with our quarterback. I think he’s fully aware, has really good self-awareness on how much money he is going to make, how it affects the team,” Telesco said. “But like most agents will tell you, like, it’s my job to figure out how to make sure that the player gets the value that he deserves and we build a team around him.”(Via Pro Football Rumors)
The Bolts’ front office has made it very clear that they believe Herbert is the man that can take them to the promised land and get the job done.
2023 will be a huge fourth year for Herbert with the Chargers and we’ll see how he fares against some of the top QB’s in the league!
