Celebrate the finale of the 2023 Coronado Community READ at 1 p.m. on March 31, at the Coronado Public Library as the Peter Sprague Group leads a magical mystery tour of Beatles classics.
Guitarist Sprague will start with the familiar and then sonically travel to new frontiers of jazz and
improvisation.
Melt when the intro guitar figure for “And I Love Her” kicks in, tap your toe to the funky vibe that “Norwegian Wood” takes, and sing along to the chorus of psychedelicized “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds.”
Sprague in an interview said he loves performing at libraries, especially the Coronado Library, because there are captive audiences.
This phenomenal afternoon will feature Allison Adams Tucker on vocals, Tripp Sprague on sax and flute, Mackenzie Leighton on bass, John Opferkuch on piano, and Peter Sprague on guitar.
Sprague is a San Diego-based jazz guitarist, composer, arranger, recording engineer, producer and life-long surfer.
He said the group will perform a “jazzified arrangement” of Beatles hits.
“They will be songs we grew up with that have a new groove,” he said.
The Los Angeles Times has called him “one of the emergent great guitarists.”
Livestream concert on April 6
Sprague also will hold a livestream concern at 7:30 p.m. on April 6, that also will include Beatles classics. More details can be found on his website at petersprague.com.
The Coronado event will mark the end of the seventh annual Coronado Community READ, which strives to strengthen the fabric of the community through the shared reading of a single book.
