On April 9, the Coronado High School track team headed to Morse High for a meet against its fellow Central League opponent. Though Madison and Crawford were each at the meet as well, Coronado faced Morse while the other two schools ran against each other.

Both the boys’ and girls’ teams won for the Islanders by scores of 67-50 and 58-47, respectively.

The boys’ team shined particularly in the distance events, crushing Morse 26-1 in those races. Seniors Derick Ritter and Vincent Russo led the charge, grabbing first and second place in the 800-meter run. Coronado also swept the floor in the 1600-meter dash, with sophomore Ziggy Raunig, Russo and freshman Evan Russo snagging the top three finishes. Raunig and Evan Russo each ran personal best times of 5:04.40 and 5:11.47, respectively.

Evan Russo and freshman Ayrton Reyes managed to finish in the top two for the 3200-meter run. Russo ran a personal best time of 11:56.30, and Reyes was right on his tail, notching a time of 11:57.46.

The Islanders also won the 4×800-meter relay with a team composed of sophomore Sebastian Tamariz, senior Oscar Alicandri, junior Ethan Schmidgal and freshman Jacob Ingold. The group ran a time of 10:24.37.

Both the 4×100 and 4×400-meter relay races went to the Islanders. The former was run by junior Xavier Marsh, senior Davin Collins, senior William Heyen and sophomore Ah’Mahn Oliver. The group posted a time of 43.43 seconds, only staving off Morse by 1/100th of a second. They also broke their own school record, and it ranks as the 19th fastest sprint relay time in San Diego CIF.

The 4×400 squad posted a time of 3:33.46 and was composed of Marsh, Vincent Russo, Heyen and Oliver.

Senior Spencer Reidarson had one of the more impressive performances for the Islanders, winning the 300-meter hurdle event with a time of 45.29 seconds. It was Reidarson’s first time competing in the event, and it’s the best time posted in the Central League this season. Reidarson also went on to finish second in the long jump and third in the triple jump.

Sophomore Jeremiah Albrektsen leapt a personal best 5’10” to secure second place in the high jump.

The girls’ score was a bit tighter than the boys’, but the girls distinguished themselves from Morse in the running events, outscoring them 42-30. The field scoring was even.

Sophomore Lily DeSena led the way in the field events, grabbing victories in both the shot put and discus. Her discus throw of 65’10” was a personal best.

Senior Summer Little and junior Maya Wilson each took first and second place in the 100-meter dash with times of 13.14 and 13.18 seconds. Little also went on to take second place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.79 seconds.

Senior Micaela Gistaro notched another victory for the Islanders in the 400-meter run, posting a time of 60.22 seconds.

Three of the Islanders’ junior girls swept the top three spots in the 1600-meter run: Carly Devore, Lily Humphrey and Edie Alicandri. Devore and Humphrey took the top two spots in the 3200-meter run and second and third place in the 800-meter run as well. Their 800-meter times of 2:50.11 and 2:50.14 were each personal bests.

Similar to Reidarson, Wilson competed in the 300-meter hurdles for the first time and took the top spot in not just the meet, but the Central League, with a time of 49.19 seconds. She beat the next fastest hurdler in the league at Morse by over three seconds.
