The Coronado Terrible Orchestra, known for its fun and not-too-serious nature, is looking for people to join its terrible ranks for the new year.

The ensemble was formed in 2025 to “bridge the gap between private practicing and ensemble performing,” wrote Cassie O’Hanlon, a flute teacher and director of the program.

They were founded on the idea that people still want to play their instruments but in low-stress circumstances where a wrong note can just be a wrong note – no chastising or pressure to be perfect.

It provides a space for adults to reconnect with their musical roots in an environment that prioritizes fun, social connection and the shared experience of making music.

“It provides a space for adults to reconnect with their musical roots in an environment that prioritizes fun, social connection and the shared experience of making music,” O’Hanlon wrote.

But they do need to get through a piece, eventually.

“We aren’t looking for perfection, but we are looking for participation,” the director said. “If you can read a staff and you aren’t afraid of the occasional squeak, you have a home here.”

The orchestra is looking for people who know the basics, who have a fundamental understanding of how to play their instrument and read sheet music – even if they’re a little out of practice, O’Hanlon added.

And they’re looking for someone who can come prepared with their instrument and their own music stand, and ready to participate.

The primary goal is community over competition.

“The primary goal is community over competition,” said the director.

Beginning Jan. 28, the group will be meeting at the Coronado Community Center. Local residents are invited to join their happily imperfect group for the next six weeks.

Anyone who’s interested needs to sign up through the Coronado Community Center website or by calling the center directly at (619) 522-7342. The rehearsal will start at 7 p.m. with a repertoire of classical and popular hits.
