Roughly halfway through the winter sports seasons, the Coronado High School girls’ water polo team has been powerful, as the squad is 9-0 as of Jan. 10.
Even more impressive than the record is the dominant nature in which the team is winning. The Islanders are outscoring opponents 129-53. The most goals the team has allowed in a game was 11 to Mater Dei Catholic in the season opener. The least the Islanders have scored in a game is 13. Upcoming seasons for this squad are also looking promising, as there is only one senior on the team, Sofia Kelly.
Also off to an impressive start is the Islanders girls’ soccer team. After a season going 4-13-2 (2-7-1 in league), the squad has won six of its first seven games, already surpassing last season’s win total.

Prior to the game on the Jan. 6, in which the Islanders lost to Eastlake, the team had given up only four scores in six games. With that being said, four of the six wins have come against teams competing in Division 2. Coronado is in Division 1. League play starts with a game against Cathedral Catholic on Jan. 13.
CHS boys’ soccer, on the other hand, has accumulated a few more losses and a tie, with an overall record of 5-3-1, outscoring opponents 19-14 through the first nine games. Similar to the girls’ team, a few of those wins have come against Division 4 opponents, but CHS is competing in Division 3. League play started against University City on Jan. 14.

On the heels of a dominant season in Division 5 that ended in a CIF semifinal game, the Coronado girls’ basketball team got bumped up to Division 4. So far, the team has fared alright, as they’re 6-6 through the first 12 games but lost the first league game of the season against High Tech High SD on Jan. 9.
Two of the key players that led Coronado to the dominant 2024-25 season continue to anchor the Islanders this year: sophomores Gabby Fichter and Emily Albin. Fichter leads the team in scoring, just as she did last year. Albin leads the charge in rebounds and blocks, as she did in ‘25, and is grabbing nearly two more rebounds per game this go around.

Freshman Izzy Guymon has fit in nicely, making up for the scoring of Selena Herrera, a senior on last year’s squad. Guymon is averaging 8.4 points per game, the second most behind Fichter.
Meanwhile, the CHS boys’ basketball team is on track to surpass last season’s win total of 14, as the group is 10-7 as of Jan. 9.
Leading the way on the offensive side is sophomore Ah’Mahn Oliver, averaging 15.8 points per game, and junior Austin Brown, tallying 11.4. Freshman Roberto Soberanis has been a nice addition, averaging 7.7 per game while being the most efficient three-point shooter, shooting 36% from beyond the arc.

A strength of this year’s squad has been rebounding, as three players are grabbing more than six boards per game: junior Aiden Roberts (8.6), Oliver (6.5) and senior Derick Ritter (6.5).
Despite going on a three game losing streak headed into league play, the boys won their first league game of the season by three against Patrick Henry.
Roughly halfway through the season, CHS winter sports are faring well, and they’ll look to keep it rolling as league play is just beginning.
