The Coronado League of Wives will be receiving a second tribute at Star Park: a bench commemorating the local historical group and its efforts during the Vietnam War.
The League of Wives was a band of women which fought for the humane treatment of husbands who had become prisoners of war (POWs) in Vietnam. The women went on multiple trips to Washington, D.C., and met with President Richard Nixon to advocate for their partners.
In June 2024, a statue of four women was placed in Star Park, becoming the first public memorial in the country to recognize military spouses.
The new bench will feature a plaque reading, “Honoring our Coronado League of Wives,” along with an alphabetical list of local spouses who were part of the movement.
In April, Coronado City Council members Kelly Purvis and Amy Steward asked their colleagues to consider adding a plaque near the statue of the women.
The council unanimously voted to move the project forward.
Project costs are estimated between $24,600 and $31,000.
