As the winter season is in full effect for Coronado High School athletics, here’s a recap of the fall season, taking a look at how the Islanders fared in their respective sports.
The football team had a solid season behind their first-year starting quarterback, sophomore Jack O’Sullivan. The Islanders finished the year at 6-4 before falling to La Jolla Country Day in the first round of CIF playoffs.
Sophomore receiver Reese Pagon had a standout year, leading the team in receiving yards and touchdowns. Senior Chase Jenkins averaged over 10 yards per carry and led the team in all-purpose yards. Senior Stanley Guymon led the team in sacks and was second in total tackles, behind senior Mason Wilson.
Most notably, head coach Kurt Hines was fired following the season’s conclusion, and the position was promptly filled by CHS teacher and former professional football player, Joshua Dean.
Islanders girls’ volleyball had another dominant season, closing with a record of 34-9, placing No. 4 in the CIF Open Division. After beating The Bishop’s School in the first round, the Islanders lost to the No. 1 seed Torrey Pines in three sets.
Sophomore outside hitter Ashlynn Proctor was the standout, as she finished first in San Diego, second in California and top 10 in the nation in kills with 735. Her sister, freshman setter Brooke Proctor, finished fifth in the San Diego Section with 957 assists.
This season brought drastic improvement for the boys’ water polo team. In his first season at the helm, David Throop led the Islanders to a 15-11 record, a large uptick from the 8-20 record the season prior. Coronado, the No. 5 seed in Division 1 for CIF, notched a win against Mt. Carmel before losing to the No. 4 seed Eastlake.
CHS cross country had a solid season, as both the boys and girls had representation on the All-League teams for the Eastern League. For the girls, Morgan Maske earned First Team status while Vivian Scott earned Second Team status. Vincent Russo made Second Team All-League to represent CHS boys’ cross country.
Senior Elleaire Lyons represented Coronado High at CIF for the San Diego Section in girls’ golf. Of the 80 participants, Lyons finished in a tie for 50th.
CHS girls’ tennis finished the regular season as the No. 14 seed in CIF Division 1. The Islanders had to face No. 3 Scripps Ranch and lost 14-4 in the first round of CIF.
In the individual tournament, the doubles duo of junior Lilah Cade and senior Logan Shapiro made it the furthest. The pair won their first two matches before losing to a duo from Canyon Crest Academy. The junior pair of Samantha Aldworth and Brynn Belong won their first round match but lost in the second round to a San Marcos duo. Senior Grace Elardo represented CHS in the singles draw and was awarded All CIF Honorable Mention honors.
