At around 7 p.m. on Nov. 25, a 16-inch water main broke in the southbound lanes of Silver Strand Boulevard at Avenida Del Sol, and the Coronado Police Department announced “severe flooding” via social media.

Photos and videos posted to social media showed a deluge near the Hotel del Coronado last night with the city’s police and fire department at the scene. The city is also working with Cal-Am and Caltrans to address the leak and flooding.

A few hours later, the city announced at midnight that the north and south bound lanes of state route 75 will be closed and detoured during the morning rush hour due to the leak, and that repair crews are anticipated to remain in the area for the next 12-24 hours to complete necessary work.

Flows had “significantly decreased” at the time of the announcement but had not been fully stopped yet.

The statement also said that Silver Strand Boulevard remains fully closed with traffic being redirected onto Strand Way.

“The Hotel Del and the Shores complex may experience fluctuations or temporary loss of water pressure during the repair process,” the city said.

Some residents reported to social media that the water coming out of their faucets were not running clear at the time of the incident.
