A stabbing at Coronado Middle School this morning has left one student at the hospital getting treated for injuries. The other student is currently in custody.

Coronado police officers responded to an incident at 10:20 a.m. Tuesday morning involving two 7th graders at the middle school library. During a class break, an altercation took place where a male student stabbed a female student twice with a pocketknife, according to a press release from the Coronado Police Department.

Both students were located and there is no active threat to students or staff, the release said, noting that “the school is not on lockdown.” Officers also conducted a security sweep of the campus after the encounter.

Officers continued their investigation this afternoon and interviewed several witnesses to the attack, according to the release. However, no further identifying information can be released at this time due to the ages of the students involved.

The victim has been transported to Rady Children’s Hospital.

Coronado Unified School District said they were offering counseling services and will continue to do so as needed.

“We are deeply relieved to share that the student is recovering this afternoon,” stated the release from the district.
