Valkyrie, the 2024-2026 Coronado canine mayor, will be walking through the annual parade on July 4 this year.
Since 2010, PAWS of Coronado — an animal shelter that provides adoption and rehabilitation services — has hosted a canine mayoral race every two years to fundraise for the facility.
During last year’s weeks-long fundraiser, 15 dog candidates were nominated and over $25,000 was raised for animal welfare in Coronado.
Tallying over 6,000 votes online, Valkyrie was named the 2024 canine mayor and will hold a ceremonial position in the parade once more this year.
Like Valkyrie, all pet nominees join the canine council and serve as ambassadors to promote PAWS of Coronado and its mission at various events.
According to PAWS of Coronado, Valkyrie’s story is one of resilience.
Valkyrie has faced the removal of an eye.
She is named after Tom Cruise’s protagonist character of the historical thriller film, “Valkyrie.”
“Her journey reminds us that even in the face of adversity, there is always hope for a brighter tomorrow,” says the PAWS of Coronado website about Valkyrie, Coronado’s eighth “paw-litician.”
