These playful pups are making the happiest sounds! Thanks to the animal care team at Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, these African-painted dogs are celebrating their fifth birthday with fun and enriching gifts! Along with delicious treats, Daisie and Roanne enjoyed unwrapping colorful tissue paper that filled cardboard boxes. Their cheerful chirps, chattering, and playful antics show how excited they are to celebrate their special day. Like our domesticated dogs, these spirited pups know how to have a good time and find joy daily. It appears they would’ve had a terrific time with their boxes, even if the treats weren’t inside.
People could feel the joy of this birthday celebration.
One person shared, “Too cool – love the sound of their glee!” It’s contagious!
Another remarked, “These are by far my favorite animals to see every time I’m at the zoo!” They are fun to watch!
Viewer @dolphin.quest responded, “Their adorable chatter!!! What a beautiful, heartfelt moment.” It is a pleasure to witness!
Fun facts about the endangered species
The African Wild Dog, also known as the African Painted Dog, is a striking species characterized by their distinctive, multicolored, patchy coat. According to the African Wildlife Foundation, much like human fingerprints, no two dogs have identical coat patterns. These adorable dogs feature large, bat-like ears and a bushy tail with a white tip. Currently, it’s estimated that only about 6,600 of these wild pups remain, as they have been classified as endangered for the past 20 years. Besides their beauty, African Wild Dogs are known for their intelligence and live in large packs. They exhibit remarkable social behavior, caring for sick or injured members of their group, and both males and females contribute to raising the young. Their communication methods are also unique; the AWF notes that “Wild Dogs have a wide range of vocalizations, including a short bark of alarm, a rallying howl, and a bell-like contact call that can be heard over long distances.” Additionally, they engage in elaborate greeting rituals that involve twittering and whining.
Whether in the wild or in our living room, dogs have a unique way of bringing joy into our day. It’s no wonder they’ve been considered man’s best friend for thousands of years and will undoubtedly be considered in the highest regard for thousands more.
