Having a bird as a pet is so different from a dog or cat living under your roof, and for reasons that have nothing to do with the type of care they need. Sure, they may not be quite as cuddly as a puppy, and most of them probably don’t want to play fetch in the backyard with you, but they’re so much fun in so many other ways. They will always keep you laughing, many of them are capable of learning to say words and phrases (as long as you’re willing to help them along the way), and many of them have some seriously smooth dance moves.

For example, the African Grey Parrot in the video below. Not only does she have a favorite song, but she also has the moves to go along with it.

@mollythegreybirdMolly’s new favorite song… that I get the luxury of hearing over and over. She especially likes the intro. #parrots #africangrey #pettok #alexafartbird #parrotdance

On Tuesday, November 19, @mollythegreybird shared this video of their African Grey Parrot, whose name is Molly, listening to her favorite song: “Barbara Ann” by the Beach Boys. What a classic — she has good taste!

But what’s most impressive to me? The way she knows how to ask Alexa to play the song for her, and the fact that Alexa fully understands her and actually does it. Sometimes Alexa doesn’t even understand humans who are speaking to her!

As soon as the song starts playing, Molly immediately finds her groove and starts bopping along. Her human noted in the caption that she loves the intro the most, which certainly seems to be true after watching the video; she asks Alexa to start playing the song from the beginning all over again before it’s even ended at least twice!

Who doesn’t love a woman who knows what she wants? You do you, Molly!

Can birds have favorite songs?

Molly isn’t the only bird who has formed an attachment to a favorite song. It’s actually common for birds to form a preference towards one genre of music over the others, and it can actually vary quite a bit depending on the bird!

According to Lafeber Company, studies have shown that while most parrots don’t like electronic dance music, their tastes can range from classical music to pop, and for some, the louder the music, the better.

Studies have also shown that birds will also choose to listen to a certain song over and over again, and over a two month time period, two parrots chose to listen to their favorite song 1,400 times collectively. Whoa!

If that’s true for the bird we see above, it seems like Molly isn’t letting go of “Barbara Ann” anytime soon. Maybe her mom should invest in some ear plugs, just in case hearing the intro of the song over and over again starts to get old.
