There are 12 City boards and commissions that exist within Coronado, and their volunteer members, who are Coronado residents, are appointed by the City Council members.
At a recent City Council meeting, staff reported that there were many inconsistencies within these committees and that it should be looked at further by the council members for suggestions.
These are the 12 boards and their purpose according to the city website:
- Civil Service Commission
- The Civil Service Commission is responsible for interpreting and administering Civil Service rules and regulations concerning the employment, promotion and discipline of city employees. The Civil Service Commission is a five-member board.

- Cultural Arts Commission
- The Coronado Cultural Arts Commission is a seven-member commission charged with providing recommendations and taking action to foster the development and enjoyment of performing, visual, cultural and other arts in Coronado.

- Design Review Commission
- The Design Review Commission fosters and encourages good design, harmonious colors and materials, good proportional relationships and generous landscaping; it also protects the health, safety, comfort and general welfare of the citizens of Coronado by providing a design review process.

- Discover Coronado/Coronado Tourism Improvement District
- The Coronado Tourism Improvement District (CTID), known as Discover Coronado, established by the Coronado City Council, has nine members. Representatives of the four largest Coronado hotels: the Hotel del Coronado, Loews Coronado Bay Resort, Coronado Island Marriott Resort and Spa and the Glorietta Bay Inn. Also represented are the Coronado Chamber of Commerce, Coronado MainStreet and the Coronado Historical Association and Visitor Center. Two at-large community representatives are appointed directly by the City Council.

- Golf Course Advisory Committee
- Their mission is to advise the Director of Recreation and Golf Services on matters concerning the golf course, golfers and clubhouse, to include, but not limited to fees, capital improvements, policies and procedures and other matters that may be referred to them.

- Historic Resource Commission
- The Historic Resource Commission is appointed by the City Council to review and take action on historic preservation program applications such as determinations of historic significance, historic alteration permits and Mills Act agreement applications. The Commission also takes on special assignments as directed by the City Council.

- Library Board
- The Coronado Public Library Board of Trustees has five members. It is a review and advisory board of the Coronado Public Library. The Board is chaired by a president, who is elected from among its members, and has an executive secretary.

- Mobility Commission
- The Mobility Commission is charged with implementing the Active Transportation Master Plan, developing a traffic calming plan, assisting City staff in researching, planning, and implementing complete streets, sustainable streets, and vision zero concepts and integrating emerging technologies, such as autonomous and electric vehicles, into the City’s transportation network.

- Parks and Recreation Commission
- The Parks and Recreation Commission acts as a liaison between the Coronado community and the Director of Recreation and Golf Services. The Commission provides input regarding programs, fees, facilities and recreational areas such as parks and beaches.

- Planning Commission
- The Planning Commission is appointed by the City Council to review and take action on planning applications such as use permits, coastal development permits, variances and subdivision maps; and to implement the adopted General Plan of the City of Coronado to serve and protect the public health, welfare and general safety of the citizens of Coronado.

- Spreckles Center Advisory Committee
- The mission of the Spreckels Center Advisory Committee is to advise the Director of Recreation Services on its discussions of programs and events and, where appropriate, its consensus regarding the scheduling and/or delivery of classes, activities, events and entertainment for the enjoyment of the community members, the public and interest groups.

- Street Tree Commission
- The Coronado Street Tree Committee serves as an advisory committee to the City Council and to City staff working with a common goal to maintain, improve, renew and protect the urban forest in public rights of way, as well as to share information with the public, enhance appreciation of trees, promote proper tree care and to encourage participation in the development of Coronado’s urban forest.
