In a bid to provide its residents with opportunities for career advancement, additional income or a better work-life balance, Discover Coronado is set to host a free community job fair on Thursday, April 18.

The event aims to connect Coronado residents with part-time and full-time job opportunities.

Discover Coronado, a destination marketing company, partners with the local hospitality industry to increase the customer base for businesses throughout Coronado Island.

Todd Little, executive director of Discover Coronado, said the job fair “could help family members earn more to stay afloat,” as families across the country are struggling with elevated costs for groceries, gasoline and everyday living.

“Recruiting high school students over 16 is important, but there are other adults in Coronado that are looking for better careers, more work hours and extra income,” Little said. “Inflation has not released its grip.”

The February 2024 preliminary unemployment rate in San Diego County is 4.7 percent, unchanged from January 2024’s unemployment rate of 4.7 percent, and above the February 2023 unemployment rate of 3.7 percent or 13,600 jobs.

Between January 2024 and February 2024, unemployment in San Diego County increased by 6,000 jobs.

Many employers participating

Among the employers participating in the fair are Coronado’s largest resorts, such as Hotel del Coronado, Glorietta Bay Inn, the Coronado Island Marriott Resort and Loews Coronado Bay Resort.

On March 22, California’s Employment Development Department (EDD) reported that between February 2023 and February 2024, leisure and hospitality in San Diego County “reported an increase of 6,100 jobs.”

Additionally, representatives from Vons, Sharp Coronado Hospital, Fox Restaurant Concepts, Naval Base Coronado, Blue Bridge Hospitality and more will be present.

Little said local businesses on Coronado Island will have access to more candidates across the age spectrum through the fair.

“It makes sense to include more demographics, so more Coronadoans are employed and more jobs on the island are filled,” Little said in an email. “We wanted to include those of retirement age because they have tremendous work and life experience to offer Coronado employers. Conversely, these positions could help them stay active, make new friends and earn wages that supplement their fixed income.”

The Coronado Chamber of Commerce will also be present with a booth to promote small businesses.
